Simply Establishing Our Core Values
“What is the ONE Thing I can do such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
-“The One Thing” by Gary Keller
At some point in our lives it’s beneficial to establish our Core Values and what we truly stand for!
Not knowing who we are and what we want is like looking for something in a pitch black room without knowing what it is we’re looking for. We’ll never find that “something” unless we know what it is, where it is, how to get it, and why we even want it in the first place.
“The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.”
- “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo
Minimalism takes away many of our distractions so we can start answering these difficult questions. Minimalism is the practice of being intentional with what we allow to stay in our lives and what we allow into our lives.
The important thing is to know in what direction we want our intentional actions to take us!
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small, manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”
- “Getting Things Done” by David Allen
First we decide on main Goals that align with our Core Values, then we can break those Goals down into smaller goals that are reachable, then we can know what actions will be beneficial in reaching our main Goals.
If we are going in different directions from day to day it’s really difficult to reach our Goals. Initially it’s hard work, like building a sturdy foundation, but after the foundation is built the rest just begins to fall into place.
One of my Core Values is to be a good provider for my family, so one of our main Goals is to reach financial independence so my Family and I have all our basic needs met and we don’t have to concern ourselves about having enough money even though I can no longer work because of my disability.
We decided to create smaller, actionable, goals to decrease our money spent on variable expenses so we can acquire income producing assets and assets that increase in value over time until we reach financially independence.
“Decrease expenses and increase the acquisition of assets that increase income and assets that gain in value over time.”
- “Becoming Financially Independent” by Ted Wind
Adopting a minimalist lifestyle has made it easier to reach our main Goal of financial independence!
“This is the beautiful secret of minimalism: It may seem like it’s about stuff, but once you’ve cut through the clutter and adopted a new frame of mind, you learn that it’s barely about ‘the stuff’ at all.”
- “The Minimalist Way” by Erica Layne
I also have a main Goal of wanting to provide something of value to my fellow human beings that are struggling with the same things I’m struggling with so I created “The Simplicity Lifestyle Blog” in the hopes that someone, somewhere will be helped by my experiences.
We may have different Goals that we want to accomplish depending on our Core Values, the important thing is to clearly define those Values so we can then make a good plan of action and implement that plan!
Like wind and water eroding a cliff, intentional actions can take down mountains!
